History of Oatland Farm
Oatland Farm was the residence of Washington Bowie, a successful export merchant said to have been one of the wealthiest citizens of Georgetown in the early 1800s. Named for George Washington, a family friend, Washington Bowie was born in Montgomery County in 1770, in the Glenmont area in a home called Hermitage. In 1820, he purchased 2,000 acres in the Olney area, and settled in a stone dwelling at Oatland Farm with his wife, Margaret Crabb Johns Bowie. The Oatland Farm acreage was divided amongst the children over time, and Oatland, Roseneath, Flint Hill and Chichester were all Bowie Family Farms in Olney associated with Washington Bowie family. He established his eldest son, Thomas Johns Bowie at Roseneath, and bequeathed Oatland Farm to his namesake, Washington Bowie II. Washington Bowie II had no children and at his death, the property went to Washington Bowie IIs sister, Margaret Dallas Bowie. Upon her death, with no children, Oatland Farm was passed to another sister, Mary Bowie Chichester. Her son, Washington Bowie Chichester, built the existing frame house on the property in 1875. His son built a house in the 1890s on adjoining land and named this new farm Chichester. The Classical Revival House at Oatland Farm has a pedimented entry porch with classical columns and a bracketed cornice. Associated structures close to the historic residence included the stone springhouse and the one-room log house. The family burial ground is on a small hilltop to the north. There, in a massive stone wall enclosure, is the final resting place for three generations of this branch of the Bowie Family.
